Primed spruce siding — sometimes sold as finger-jointed primed wood trim or lap siding — is solid or engineered spruce milled into siding profiles and coated at the factory or mill with a basic latex or oil primer. It's a real product with a real place in construction: it's affordable, it's easy for a crew to cut and nail, and it takes paint well when it's brand new. A lot of homes around Whatcom County were built or re-sided with it in decades past, and plenty of it is still on walls today.

If installers don't seal every cut end with primer or sealant before installation (and in our experience, this step gets rushed or skipped constantly, even by well-meaning crews), that's where rot starts. It usually starts invisibly, behind the paint film, and by the time you can see it, the board is already compromised.

Every material has a climate it handles well and a climate it doesn't. Primed spruce siding does reasonably well in dry, stable climates. Whatcom County isn't one of those.
Salt air off the bay
